Elkhorn Slough, Monterey

Jul 8, 2012

We're in California for a two week vacation and made a stop to paddle the Elkhorn Slough, California's second largest marine wetland.

It's about 6 mile paddle through the Slough.  You should time the tides right and follow the rule of thirds: 1/3 of your time paddling in and 2/3 of your time paddling back out

We saw all sorts of shore birds and you'll see some that appear to be standing up in the middle of the slough.  If you're not careful, you'll end up beaching yourself on a sand bar.

You can smell them before you see these seals.  They are also very loud.

Rows of harbor seals sunbathe along the mudflats

We saw our fair share of sea otters.  They got very up close and personal.  Super cute.

Not sure if you can see it but there's a huge gathering of sea otters just playing off the shoreline.

It was a pleasant paddle and I'm glad we took the time out to explore it.
