Now that I've tackled the open waters of Puget Sound, I think I'm ready to go explore on my own a little. So I'm heading to Owens Beach for the day. It's about a 14mile round trip from the Dock Street park launch point.
Very beautiful sunny February morning with temperatures forecasted to be in the upper 50s / lower 60s but I'm still very bundled. I haven't fully recovered from the chill during the Hoods Head paddle. Not a lot of wind to contend with so off I go.
Lots of interesting piers and pilings along the shoreline. Look how calm the water is. Notice the Olympic mountains in the background and the virtually cloud free skies. Just gorgeous.
Was very tempted to paddle between the naval ships but prudence got the better of me. Although there's a huge bouy keeping the ships from bumping into each other, I didn't want to put it to the test.
Got a friendly visitor during the paddle. This little seal followed me for quite a distance. Although many folks would find this endearing, I really am skittish around wildlife of any sort - on land or sea. I kept waiting for this guy to jump on my deck or tip me over. If I can see you, you're too close.
Very long paddle, very well worth it.
